SOBBING IN THE RAIN.
I was a Montessori student, parent, elementary lead teacher for many years and am now an administrator and consultant. Montessori is not just my job, it’s my philosophy of life. I there are no clear lines between my values, spirituality, and pedagogy…it’s just who I am at this point.
The first time I read Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, I found my self sobbing. Whole body wracking sobs. Not because what she wrote was sad, but because it MOVED me. Here was a person who related to the earth in a way that resonated with me as a teacher, a parent, and an individual. It is the relationship of community, the same sense of interdependence we teach in our classrooms. Her clarity and eloquence spoke to my soul.
Kimmerer identifies as a parent, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. These intersectional identities allow her to speak to wide audiences about the urgency and depth of our connection to our planet. This comes at a time when our relationship to our earth will not only determine the mental, spiritual, and physical health of ourselves and our students, but also the future of humanity.
Kimmerer will be the keynote speaker at a poignant event focused on our interdependence with the planet this summer. I am so excited to attend and hear her speak, along with many giants of the Montessori world who will be speaking on this vital topic. Trillium Montessori will be hosting Montessori and Ecological Consciousness June 17-19, 2024.
Join me and others in the Montessori community in this important work! Montessori is STRONGER TOGETHER!
